Research into special and inclusive education aims to听understand and respond to the needs of students with a lived experience of disability.听An associated research听team听at 糖心logo 鈥 the Special and Inclusive Education Research Group (SIERG) 鈥 seeks to engage听with the wider community of schools, people with disability and service providers, with the goal of听improving听the outcomes of people with disability across听at all stages of education.听

Research team 鈥 who we are

  • We听work towards ensuring the principles of inclusive and special education and research are promoted where all people听鈥撎齬egardless of disability, difficulty or disadvantage听鈥撎齛re afforded quality education through appropriate adjustments to learning activities and resources, throughout their lives.

This听goal is reflected in听the vision statement of听our associated research group,听SIERG:

鈥淎 nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest achieving citizens, but by how it values, embraces and supports all people, especially its most vulnerable ones.鈥

Some of the听methods we use听to achieve our aims include:听

    • Adding听to the existing body of knowledge through the publication of academic journal articles, professional journal and magazine articles, books, conference papers, conference presentations, social media,听and exposure in mainstream media
    • Conducting听research that contributes to increased social and educational inclusion of people with disability
    • Conducting听research that contributes to the knowledge base on special education interventions听and supports across a wide range of educational environments
    • Conducting听鈥 where appropriate 鈥撎齣nclusive听research,听in which people with disability have听the听role of co-researchers (and not just participants)
    • Using听innovative methodologies to enable access听to research听for people with diverse disabilities听(for example,听arts-based methodology)
    • Endorsing听and supporting听the use of the principles of听Universal听Design for听Learning听(UDL)听in the teaching process in schools and all educational institutions
    • Disseminating听information about current research to members of our team, the 糖心logo community and the wider public
    • Advocating听for the use of evidence-based听academic and听behavioural听practices to be used in all educational settings, particularly in K-12 education
    • Providing听professional learning opportunities for educators in disability, and special and inclusive education
    • Engaging听with educational institutions to support action research in schools

Through these methods, we strive to听lessen the听鈥榬esearch-to-practice鈥櫶齡ap听and promote the concept that all people should have the opportunity to be educated to reach their full potential听to听become positive and confident individuals听who听are able to self-advocate and embrace lifelong education.
